Tree Care Tips for Arizona Winters

How to Care for Your Trees During Winter

Winter temperatures in the Southwest are much milder than in many other parts of the country. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some noticeable impacts of wintertime around your home, including on the trees that grow in your yard. It’s important to keep your trees looking nice all year long, so keep these tips in mind for caring for your trees during the winter months.

Keep Trees Pruned

One of the most important parts of keeping your trees healthy, especially during the winter months, is found in keeping them pruned. Cutting off dying branches and trimming back limbs that are growing unruly not only makes your trees look better, but it also keeps them healthy.

Depending on the species of trees growing in your yard, the winter months may see all the leaves fall off your trees. If that’s the case, regular pruning is even more important, especially for the look of your yard.

Consider Adding Mulch

Adding mulch to the ground around your trees is especially helpful if you are trying to help a new tree grow. Mulch acts like a layer of insulation that helps protect the tree’s root system against colder temperatures that can stunt growth or lead to other problems.

Just because winters in the Southwest aren’t as extreme as they are in many other areas of the country, it doesn’t mean that colder temperatures can’t damage trees, especially young ones. Think of putting mulch along the base of a young tree like covering yourself with a warm blanket when you get cold. Holding in as much heat as possible is important for the roots.

Don’t Stop Watering Trees

Many people assume that when temperatures aren’t running in the triple digits like they do during the summertime in our area that they can stop watering their trees. That’s simply not the case.

Since snow is so uncommon in our area, the ground doesn’t get a lot of moisture, even when temperatures are cooler. As a rule of thumb, if the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and there is no snow cover on the ground, you should continue to water your trees just like you do during the summer.

Keeping your trees healthy during the winter is an important part of keeping your home beautiful while also ensuring that you have a shady place to enjoy when the weather warms back up.
