How to Prevent Crooked Tree Growth

In a place like Las Vegas where conditions are mostly dry and arid for the better part of the year, some extra care needs to go into maintaining trees. While regular watering and irrigation are certainly musts, it’s equally important to take steps to encourage healthy tree growth. If one of your priorities with newly planted trees is to prevent crooked development, read on for our tips on how to accomplish this goal.

Use Tree Stakes Properly

When done properly, staking is an effective way to prevent crooked tree growth. It’s more likely to be beneficial with trees planted in sandy or wet soil. Top-heavy trees also tend to respond well to staking when first planted. To stake your trees, fo the following:

  • Use 2-inch-by-2-inch wooden stakes, about 5 feet in height.
  • Use metal stakes for heavier trees.
  • Gently rock the tree back and forth until it naturally stands up straight.
  • Use a small sledgehammer to put the stakes firmly in place.
  • Tie a wide, smooth strap around the tree’s trunk, making sure it’s not too tight.

For newly planted trees, leave the support stakes in place for one growing season only. Beyond this point, if you’re having issues with crooked growth, adjust the soil around the tree so the tree can be gently shifted. If added support is needed, attach a few guy wires to the tree. The wires will then be anchored about 10 to 12 feet from the trunk.

Regularly Prune and Trim and Your Trees

Trees sometimes begin to grow crooked if branches are uneven or heavier on one side. Nip this issue in the bud, so to speak, with regular tree pruning and trimming. If you’re not familiar with how to do either of these tasks, it’s best to call a tree care pro. Hiring a professional for pruning and trimming also ensures that cuts are made in a way that doesn’t affect the tree’s overall growth, health, and development.

Firmly Plant Your New Trees in the Ground

Stakes aren’t going to be too beneficial if younger trees aren’t firmly planted. This means making sure you dig deep enough for the roots to correctly develop and spread, so the tree gains added support as it grows. Be sure to place enough soil around your trees and minimize the possibility of erosion. Also, avoid planting new trees on hills or in areas that are fully exposed to strong winds.
